Alternative Refrigerants for Commercial Refrigeration

As the first step of the U.S. HFC phase-down takes effect, the supermarket industry is seeking clarity on alternative refrigerant options and their current approval status. This tool provides a high-level summary of current and future refrigerant options for U.S. commercial refrigeration applications, including:

  • Stationary Refrigeration Remote Systems

  • Remote Condensing Units

  • Self-Contained Refrigerated Cases

Top 5 Takeaways From The Sustainable Refrigeration Summit

We recently hosted the first-ever Sustainable Refrigeration Summit, bringing together supermarket refrigeration stakeholders, government agencies, and policymakers to address the challenges to achieving zero emissions in supermarket refrigeration.

NASRC members can now access the session slides and recordings in our Member Resource Library, but we've also compiled our top 5 takeaways from the Summit below:


1. Natural refrigerants are becoming standard in new stores
A growing number of food retailers are choosing natural refrigerants in new store construction. However there are still challenges that need to be addressed, and given the very low rate of new construction we can't achieve zero emissions without addressing existing stores.

2. Existing stores need more solutions
Existing stores represent the greatest opportunity for HFC emissions reduction, but also the greatest challenge. Retailers need more solutions in the market to modularly transition existing facilities, such as natural refrigerant condensing units and codes and standards updates to allow a higher R290 charge limit.

3. Service workforce is a limiting factor
Even if all other barriers were removed, service workforce constraints will significantly limit the rate of the transition away from HFCs. There is a need for workforce development solutions to build a robust technician workforce with access to natural refrigerant training.

4. Funding is needed to accelerate the transition
Upfront cost premiums of natural refrigerant technologies remain one of the leading barriers in both new and existing stores. There is a need for new funding sources to support and accelerate the transition, especially for small and independent food retailers.

5. Effective policies can remove challenges
Increasing regulatory pressures at the state and federal levels are driving the transition to low-GWP and natural refrigerant technology solutions. Effective policies can address challenges and support the transition to move the industry forward together.


Most importantly, it was clear across the summit that solutions to these challenges will required a coordinated effort with all stakeholders. NASRC is leading that effort together with our members and partners.

Remco Joins NASRC, Accelerating Natural Refrigerant Training for Technicians

Mechanicsburg, PennsylvaniaRemco Inc., a commercial HVAC and refrigeration installation and service provider, has joined the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) at the silver level. The NASRC is an action-oriented 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to creating a climate-friendly future for supermarket refrigeration through natural refrigerants.

A growing number of supermarkets seeking to operate more sustainably and navigate new refrigerant regulations are beginning to look to climate-friendly natural refrigerants - including ammonia, CO2, and hydrocarbons - as an important part of the solution. However, due to a unique set of market barriers, natural refrigerant adoption in US supermarkets has not yet scaled.

Due to the low adoption rate, there have been limited natural refrigerant training opportunities for contractors, which in turn has created uncertainty for some supermarkets considering natural refrigerants. In addition, a shrinking technician workforce has exacerbated the service readiness challenges.

“For contractors who are already stretched thin, it can be difficult to justify investing in natural refrigerant training if their customers aren’t moving in that direction. This has led to gaps in training resources. As the demand for natural refrigerants increases, it’s important to fill those gaps and prevent training from becoming a bottleneck for scaled adoption,” said Morgan Smith, NASRC manager of programs & operations.

And that demand is already increasing. According to Remco, their technicians are encountering natural refrigerants with increasing frequency.

“We are seeing everything from booster and cascade CO2 systems to micro-distributed systems employing hydrocarbon refrigerants,” said Carl Hollomon, service manager of Remco’s Richmond branch. “So we understand the importance of educating our technicians to ensure they have the knowledge and tools available to them to safely troubleshoot and repair the multitude of systems they may encounter in the field. Remco has a dedicated staff of full-time trainers and a fully operational mock supermarket at our Mechanicsburg, PA training facility that allows us to give hands on training to all of our upcoming service and installation technicians. Even still the ongoing pandemic has posed a new set of challenges when it comes to training for alternative natural refrigerants, where we used to rely heavily on OEMs, our focus has shifted to adopting a curriculum that can be used in-house to educate our technicians, and that’s where we see a major benefit in partnering with NASRC.” 

Together with the industry, NASRC is working to remove the barriers preventing the widescale adoption of natural refrigerants in supermarkets, including service readiness, upfront costs, and data gaps. Remco’s participation in the NASRC membership network will bolster the organization’s efforts to address workforce development gaps that have slowed the adoption of natural refrigerants.

Fazio Mechanical Brings Service Readiness Expertise as New NASRC Gold Member

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Fazio Mechanical Services has joined the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) as a gold member. The NASRC is an action-oriented 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to removing the barriers slowing the adoption of natural refrigerants in supermarkets to create a more climate-friendly future for refrigeration.

NASRC drives their mission forward with tremendous support from the supermarket refrigeration industry, including over 24,000 supermarket locations, major equipment manufacturers, service contractors, and other industry stakeholders. The organization is structured to leverage the expertise of their members to implement initiatives that will advance natural refrigerants.

 The primary barriers that the organization currently focuses on include upfront and ongoing costs of natural refrigerant technologies, uncertainty around lifecycle costs, and availability of service technicians who are qualified to handle natural refrigerants. Fazio Mechanical Services brings a new expertise to the organization to help drive progress on what the organization calls ‘service readiness.’

“There are a number of factors contributing to the service readiness barrier,” said Danielle Wright, executive director of the NASRC. “Not only is the technician workforce shrinking, but we also see a shortage of training resources and programs for technicians starting with school HVACR programs and continuing into the field. We are excited to work with Fazio Mechanical Services to implement solutions to address this challenge.”

The Arcticom Group Brings New Service Perspectives as Platinum NASRC Member

Walnut Creek, California—The Arcticom Group (TAG) has joined the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) as a platinum member. The NASRC is a 501c3 nonprofit focused on eliminating the barriers slowing the adoption of natural refrigerants in supermarkets, including training for service contractors.

TAG is a service contractor with expertise in the design and delivery of maintenance programs, repairs, retrofits, remodels, and new store deployments in the commercial refrigeration industry. The company has grown rapidly since their founding in 2017, and now provides service and maintenance in ten states across the Western United States, and installation services throughout the entire country.

“The Arcticom Group’s participation with the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council is a logical extension of our values and our mission,” said Jim Pape, CEO of TAG. “As one of our nation’s largest supermarket-focused service and installation companies, we bear a heavy daily responsibility for the refrigerant responsibilities of our customers. Across the country, the supermarket industry has begun to transition to climate-friendly refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP). Natural refrigerants, including carbon dioxide (CO2), ammonia (NH3), and hydrocarbons, are very low-GWP refrigerant alternatives, but the transition to natural refrigerants and other low-GWP alternatives has presented a challenge for many supermarkets due to a unique set of market barriers.

One frequently cited barrier is a lack of qualified technicians who are trained to service natural refrigerant systems, and the need for qualified service technicians is expected to grow as more natural refrigerant systems are installed. There are a number of factors contributing to this challenge, including a shrinking technician workforce and limitations on existing trainings and training resources.

The NASRC was formed to address this challenge along with other barriers that are slowing the adoption of natural refrigerants in supermarkets. The organization has brought together over 125 industry organizations to take actions that overcome the challenges associated with naturals, and TAG’s participation will bring a new perspective on the “service readiness” barriers the NASRC is dedicated to addressing.  

 “TAG locations all have direct experience with installing and maintaining natural refrigerant systems,” said Pape. “At TAG, we are committed to aggressively growing that expertise through our own in-house programs and the use of great content from industry leading manufacturers. Robust installation and maintenance capacity are necessary building blocks to de-risking and accelerating the adoption of natural refrigerant systems.”
